As a recovering data scientist, I couldn’t resist gathering a little informal feedback from MidMod Home Tour attendees about their favorite parts of the Dekker House. Over 30 people kindly shared their thoughts on a clipboard as they headed out, and the seven volunteer docents and I also had plenty of wonderful conversations throughout the day.

Favorite Spaces in the House

Den/Library Room

Favorite Architectural Elements

  • Polished concrete floors

  • Redwood ceilings

  • Travertine fireplaces

  • Brick walls

Mr. Dekker’s design and material choices have held up beautifully over time, and it was a pleasure to hear so many visitors respond to them with such admiration. One of the first things we did after buying the house was remove old layers of linoleum and adhesive so that the original concrete floor could be ground and polished, revealing the gorgeous gravel aggregate beneath.

Honorable Mentions

  • Midcentury furniture

  • All the color — especially oranges

  • Lighting/Mood

  • Textiles and fabrics throughout

  • Natural elements like dry branches, twigs, plants

I was so humbled by the kind feedback and excitement, especially about the interior design elements, which I’ve had the pleasure of curating over the past several years. It was a gift to see the house appreciated in this way, and I’m so grateful to everyone who took the time to share what they loved and the amazing team of volunteer docents!

These are also two of my favorite spaces in the house, especially during the winter and its long, dark evenings. The Den is where I love to settle in by the fire and unwind, and the Lounge is perfect for relaxing with music, a glass of wine, and a good conversation.
